Masterclass – Painting Course – Materials List.

Oil Paints

Winton oils have a strong pigment for student quality (Cork Art Supplies has a great discount running now so good time to buy.

Of course artist quality paints are better but more expensive. Winsor and Newton artist quality is good, or Michael Harding (my favourite artist quality, but they are much more expensive than student quality).

Titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red medium, permanent alizarin crimson, phthalocyanine (phthalo) blue, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre and burnt Sienna or burnt umber or raw umber.   These links are for Cork Art Supplies.

Or the other online shop for paints etc is K&M Evans in Dublin,

With this selection of paints, you will be able to mix any colours you need.   Don’t buy cheap paint as there is no pigment in them and they only make work for you!

Brushes and Palette Knives

You will need a selection of brushes in different sizes.  (Rosemary & Co., Ivory long flats and filberts 2, 4, 6, and 10 are my favourite brushes).  or hog hair long flats.    I am sure you have lots of brushes already so go with what you have to start.

Two tear shaped palette knives in different sizes, one small, one large.   I use a Liquitex free style palette knife in size 12, and RGM No 61 and 34 (hard to get the 34 but here is a link to the 33 which is a bit smaller) but you need to see what knives you like yourself.

Canvas

Stretched canvases or canvas boards.   I will be painting my demonstrations on lots of different sizes including 15x20cm, 20x25cm, 25x30cm, 30x30cm, 60x60cm and 60x80cm boards and canvases during the course.

My advice is not to paint big on the challenges.   A 20x25cm or 25x30cm (8″x 10″ or 10 x 12″), would be best so you get it finished quickly.   You will have a challenge at the end of each module so whatever size you decide on get 6!

Palette

Disposable, wooden or glass palettes.   But an old tile will work too.

Solvent

Sansodor (Winsor & Newton), Gamsol or Zest-it, or a similar product with no smell.   Cork Art Supplies have a good lo odour turps

Painting Medium

I mix my own medium of 50/50, solvent/refined linseed, or walnut oil.   Liquin impasto

Clean-up

Baby wipes or paper towels/kitchen roll table easel

Easel

Table or floor easel.

I will run through all these supplies during the course too.   Don’t worry if you don’t have everything.

Most of the demos only use three colours, cadmium yellow, cadmium red and ultramarine blue + white (and yellow ochre to prime canvas).
