Autumn Skerries Mills

Walking to work, as it was raining, I walked over the top path and noticed these lovely unripe blackberries in the hedge between the carpark and the path, with the five sail windmill in the background. The first sign of autumn. Whipped the phone out and took a few snaps. I am daily painting at the moment and working on small canvases. "Autumn Skerries Mills" [...]

Sunny-Side Up!

On the easel today was "Sunny-side Up". I am working from home this week and running out of props. This egg was going in the bin so I grabbed it. Conkers and Crutches

"Conkers" 6" x 8" oil on board I am making the most of "resting up" and working on small still life studies this week. We collected these conkers at St Stephen's Green last weekend. They were falling off the trees and hitting everyone. It was hilarious. All the children were running to collect them. It was nice to see the old tradition of playing conkers [...]

Garlic Still Life

I am laid up with a sore knee so painting from home. Looking around the kitchen I spotted these garlic and thought I would give them a go. Love painting small. "Garlic" is available HERE if you would like to purchase it.

Self-portrait!

When you don't have a model the next best thing is a self-portrait! My first attempt was from a photo on my iPad. 6' x 8" oil on board The second is working from a mirror.   6" x 6" oil on board. Really enjoying these studies and will keep practising.   Plenty of room for improvement, and practice makes perfect after all!!

Holiday sketches and paintings

Just back from an amazing three week break in Lanzarote in May. The first week was with my painting buddies, Michelle and Joyce and we managed to get the pochade boxes out for a few plein air sessions and the sketch books were always in the beach bags. Lanzarote has a lot to offer artists with its unusual landscape.   Volcanic mountains in amazing violets, blues [...]

My top 5 for plein air painting

My top five picks for plein air painting keep changing but this is the current favourites. 1. EASEL The first essential is of course the easel.   To be honest I have two favourites so I will count this as one.  It depends on where I intent to paint and the weather conditions.   If the forecast is windy and wet then the definite favourite is my [...]

The Rock and the Bill

Rockabill Lighthouse Today's painting is of Rockabill Lighthouse off Skerries, title "The Rock And The Bill" 6" x 6" oil on panel. Rockabill is a group of two islands "The Rock" and "The Bill" situated about 6 kilometres off Skerries south beach, County Dublin.   The two granite islands are separated by a channel about 20 metres wide.   On "The Rock" there is the lighthouse with [...]

Shenick timelapse painting

I did a time-lapse of the painting of a photo I took while out walking Molly our dog on South Strand.   The wind was very strong and it was blowing up the sea nearly blurring out Rockabill Lighthouse in the distance. It took me half the time to get back from the head than it was walking to it, and sure was an invigorating [...]

Worth the wait!

November and December are always our busier months with fairs running up to Christmas and of course the gallery has to be manned too. So with one thing or another I haven't had time to paint since October and today was my first day back. Storm In A Teacup, the ice cream shop on Skerries Harbour is always busy no matter what the weather, but [...]

Sunset, Skerries Harbour

I love a big canvas.   So this 120x100cm canvas was perfect for a painting I had planned all summer.   The image I was working from was a  photo I took one evening after a lovely dinner in Stoops, our favourite watering hole on Skerries Harbour. Skerries harbour is always spectacular at sunset, but that evening it was extra special.   "Sunset, Skerries Harbour" [...]

Plein Air Holiday

PLEIN AIR HOLIDAY IN HOLLAND Deep in concentration on the beautiful sandy beach of Katwijk ann Zee Last year I took a Masterclass in Holland with Dutch Painter Roos Schuring.  The plan was to study and paint rain clouds and stormy skies,  but as you can see there wasn't a cloud in the sky. But no one was complaining!     Four days of fabulous [...]

Keeping busy

Three weeks on holiday in Lanzarote is a long time to be away from painting, I start getting withdrawal symptoms.   So I have to fit a bit of painting or sketching in during the day at some time.  Usually first thing in the morning, before the pool, or late in the evening when it is cooler. This is a painting I have wanted to do [...]

Skerries Harbour
